Montauk
The NegotiationMontauk is the intended destination of Emily Wade’s attempt to withdraw from her changed life and begin healing; her journey toward the rented week-long stay is overtaken by an accident before she can return and speak with Jackson Caine.
Setting and Intended Stay
In fall, as temperatures cool, Gregory Davis and his wife rent a place in Montauk for a week and invite Emily to join them. The location offers Emily a temporary setting apart from her usual responsibilities: she sees the visit as a chance to spend time with her father and reflect on what has happened.
Emily’s Planned Retreat
Emily decides she needs a few days away for soul-searching and time alone. At eight o’clock in the evening, she loads her suitcase into a rental car and begins the drive. She has started late because she wanted to put everything in order first, but she is not worried about the store: Katie Collins will look after it while she is gone.
The journey is also meant to create distance from Jackson Caine and the thoughts of their relationship. Emily hopes to use the time to heal her broken heart and prepares herself for life to be different when she returns. Montauk therefore represents a deliberate pause, not simply a change of scenery: she is trying to make room for reflection while stepping away from both work and romantic distress.
Journey Interrupted
Emily is still headed toward Montauk when the accident occurs. Jackson later understands that this was where she had been going before the crash, and that she intended to tell him about the pregnancy after she returned. The planned stay thus becomes a point of painful interruption: instead of the conversation Emily had postponed until after her time away, Jackson learns that she had been pregnant and that no heartbeat could be found. The evidence establishes Montauk as her intended destination, not as the site of the accident.
